Is Being Paid to Change the World Even Acceptable?

If you are one of those individuals who know me on a personal level, you are aware of the fact that one of my favorite pastimes is disproving myths that large groups of people tend to believe in so wholeheartedly, especially when it comes to online business.

An old myth that a majority of the world still believes in is that the concepts of making money and giving back to the world are at odds with each other and cannot successfully coexist. Many individuals will even go so far as to say that there should never be an attempt to combine them and turn them into a career.

If you believe in this myth, you have a major choice to then make. Do you dedicate your time and money towards making more money, or do you dedicate both of these things towards helping individuals and the causes that are around you? Your energy essentially must go towards making a living and supporting yourself and your family, or making a significant contribution to the communities and world in which you live.

Because this blatant lie has been told so many times, a majority of the world has come to believe that it is true. Whether they are aware of it or not, each individual most likely believes it to some extent.

This lie has gone further than just making people believe that it is unacceptable to mix service and work. Society has adopted the belief that it is immoral to ask for or accept money for working to solve the world’s biggest issues that are detrimentally affecting humanity. So many of us consider this concept to be “shameful”, or unethical.

I have provided you with a list of some examples of major things that you are not supposed to expect payment for, or that you are supposed to be paid very little for if you do it for a living:

• Teaching
• Peacemaking
• Being a Caretaker
• Working to Save the Environment
• Helping to Feed the Hungry
• Fighting the Injustices of the World
• Creating Inspiring Art or Beautiful Music
• Helping to Improve the Spirituality of Humanity
• Supporting Individuals’ Emotional Needs and Working With Them Through Therapy

This inaccurate myth has an incredibly large impact on the career choices that people in turn make. It helps to determine what businesses are created, and what job paths people pursue.

Even some of our brightest individuals in history thought that it was immoral to be paid for pursuing careers that helped to better the world. Others thought that it was simply impossible to successfully do so. In modern times, some of our most intelligent minds work for corporations or nasty businesses instead of dedicating their lives to non-profits or companies that have the betterment of society in mind. They believe that it is essentially impossible to be paid for the things that I just mentioned, and have thus decided to dedicate their talents elsewhere. The fact that this happens so often is absolutely tragic. Too many people pursue careers that do not successfully align with their personal values, morals, ethics, and life goals. No one should have to partake in a job that doesn’t successfully feed his or her soul with goodness.
